Desk Buying Guide

Finding the right office desk can make all the difference to your experience of working from home, as well as how productive youre able to be. There are lots of different factors to take into account when youre looking at desks, from the space you have available to your budget and your specific needs. Youll also find that there are plenty of different options to choose from, so where do you start? Our desk buying guide is here to help you make these decisions simple.

The different options available

Desks come in many different types and familiarising yourself with the range is a great place to start. If you’re short on space then a wall mounted desk or a desk on wheels could help keep your home flexible, while a corner desk can accommodate an unusual room shape. Sit/stand desks are ideal if you’re looking to avoid long periods of sitting while the innovative treadmill desk is the ultimate option if you’re keen to maintain your productivity and fitness at the same time.

Picking the right Size

The ideal size choice for your desk will be the largest one that comfortably fits the space that you have available. A regular two drawer desk will usually come in at just over a meter wide and if you have more room then you can add on drawer or storage extras. Make sure you measure your space before making a purchase, both in terms of where the desk will fit and whether your chosen chair will fit underneath it.

How much storage do you need?

Mess and clutter doesn’t serve anyone when it comes to being efficient and productive. Choose a desk that has convenient drawers and shelves that help you to stay organised and ensure everything you need to do that is within easy reach.

A desk that supports you as you sit

If you’re a regular at suffering from back pain and muscle strain, your desk may have something to do with it. The advice from health professionals when it comes to desk buying includes ensuring that your forearms and wrists will be level and parallel with the floor, and that there is enough space for your screen to be at least an arm’s length in front of you.

Materials and finishes

If you’re buying a desk purely for a private home office then you are probably the only person to consider when it comes to aesthetic finish. However, if you’re buying equipment for an office space, or you’re likely to have clients at home, it’s important to buy a desk that looks and feels the way you want it to. Most ‘wood effect’ desks will be made from MDF, which is robust but not as aesthetically pleasing as real wood. However, it does have its advantages, for example being easy to move around if you want to change your office set up in the future.

Budget and futureproofing

The cheapest desk isn’t always going to be the best option. While it’s important to ensure you stay within your budget constraints, consider how long you’re likely to want to work from the desk and whether your chosen model is likely to be durable enough. Being forced to buy a new option in a few months could make your choice much more expensive. Take a look at our range of work desks to find the right option for you.
